Preprints & Incremental Sharing

Preprinting is on the rise. This solution will increase usage of preprints for various forms of early sharing, reporting on incremental findings as snapshots of research, and accelerating time to publication by posting preprints of journal article submissions. The solution includes advocacy, analysis of preprinting activities, promoting early preprinting, and connecting reviews and assessments of preprints to make them more visible and discoverable. Facilitating credit for all preprint-related work will help to incentivize researchers.

Goals

Work with funders and organizations supporting preprinting to build a knowledge and evidence base on levels of preprinting in different disciplines, motivations and incentives for preprinting, and identify methods of increasing preprints. Investigate costs, levels of expertise and roles of existing research facilitators, and evaluations of team success as defined by outputs and researcher opinions.

eLife’s New Publishing Model

Starting in 2023, eLife will no longer make accept/reject decisions but will publish all peer-reviewed papers on its website as Reviewed Preprints, including an eLife assessment and public reviews. Authors can respond and either revise/resubmit or declare it as the final Version of Record.
